Cold Emergency Activation - February 16, 2014

Sunday, February 16, 2014

On Sunday, February 16, 2014, the Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. Additional services and supports beyond what is already provided for by the Winter Plan will be available to help residents who are homeless. Please note that no warming buses will be in operation; instead, additional warming sites will be opened.

The following locations will open as warming sites tonight:

  • Old DC Council Chamber (441 4th Street, NW), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • West End Library (24th and L Streets, NW), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th Street, NE), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am (ON STANDBY)

The Shelter Hotline maintains the census at all sites and adjustments are made as needed based on utilization at any location.

It is expected the same plan will be followed Monday night. Overnight warming sites will close at 7 am Tuesday morning. Based on the weather forecast, the Cold Alert will not be activated the rest of the week.

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons in DC who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates.
