Wednesday, February 12, 2014

On Wednesday, February 12, 2014, the Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. Please note that due to the amount of snow expected, it will not be safe to operate warming buses. No warming buses will be in operation, additional warming sites will be opened. Extra outreach will commence today to bring homeless individuals to safe and warm facilities before the weather makes transport dangerous. Staff will be present at the following former warming bus locations to inform, direct and request transport for homeless individuals to other warming site locations.

The following locations will be CLOSED:

  • Judiciary Square Area (5th and C Streets, NW)
  • Union Station (2 Massachusetts Avenue, NE)
  • Farragut Square Area (17th and H Streets, NW)
  • West End Library Parking Lot (24th and L Streets, NW)

The following locations will be open as warming sites*:

  • Old DC Council Chamber (441 4th Street, NW), Co-ed, open at 7:00 pm
  • Greenleaf Recreation Center (201 N Street, SW), Coed, open at 9:00 pm
  • Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th Street, NE), Co-ed, open at 9:00 pm
  • West End Library (24th and L Streets, NW), Co-ed, open at 9:00 pm

*Individuals may access these sites during normal business hours today prior to set-up for warming site/shelter purposes.

Warming site end times will be the following:

  • If DC Government is open on time – shelters/warming sites close at normal time of 7:00 am
  • If DC Government has delayed opening – shelters/warming sites close by the hours delayed (i.e., one or two hours after 7:00 am)
  • If DC Government is closed - shelters/warming sites will remain open 24 hours

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates.
