Cold Emergency Activation - February 14, 2014

Friday, February 14, 2014

On Friday, February 14, 2014, the Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. Please note that due to the amount of snow, no warming buses will be in operation, overflow shelters and additional warming sites will be opened.

The following locations will open as warming sites tonight:

  • Old DC Council Chamber (441 4th Street, NW), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th Street, NE), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • West End Library (24th and L Streets, NW), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am

The Shelter Hotline maintains the census at all sites and determines if changes need to be made as capacity is reached at any location.

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons in DC who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates.
