Cold Emergency Activation - February 17, 2014

Monday, February 17, 2014

On Monday, February 17, 2014, the Cold Emergency Alert will be activated.

The following locations will open as warming sites tonight:

  • West End Library (24th and L Streets, NW), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th Street, NE), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am

Please Note:

  • Old DC Council Chamber (441 4th Street, NW), will be closed tonight
  • Kennedy Recreation Center is currently closed because of water issues; Sherwood Rec Center will be replacement site if needed
  • The Shelter Hotline will have latest information about open sites and will transport as needed
  • The Cold Emergency Alert will be deactivated Tuesday and standard procedures will be in place if the Hypothermia Alert is activated

The Shelter Hotline maintains the census at all sites and adjustments are made as needed based on utilization at any location.

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons in DC who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates.
