Cold Emergency Activation - February 26, 2014

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

On Wednesday, February 26, 2014, the Cold Emergency Alert will be activated.

In addition to shelters, the following locations will open as overnight warming sites:

  • West End Library (24th and L Streets, NW), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am
  • Sherwood Recreation Center (640 10th Street, NE), Co-ed, 9:00 pm – 7:00 am

Please Note:

  • Old DC Council Chamber (441 4th Street, NW) IS NOT AVAILABLE TONIGHT; Sherwood Recreation Center will be used instead
  • The Shelter Hotline will have latest information about open sites and will transport as needed.

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons in DC who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates.
