Cold Emergency Activation - March 4, 2014

Tuesday, March 4, 2014

The Cold Emergency Alert will be activated again Tuesday night. Additional services and supports will be available to help residents who are homeless.

  • Due to the delayed opening, shelters/warming sites have extended the end time to 9 am
  • Since DC Government will be open tomorrow, shelter and warming site functions will cease, but individuals may remain inside to keep warm
  • Shelters and warming sites will re-activate at 9:00 pm on Tuesday evening
  • The Shelter Hotline is transporting tonight; they will have the latest information about open sites and will transport as needed.

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons in DC who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates.

To receive alerts, register with Alert DC online at https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/register.php or by texting "DC" to 411911.
