Cold Emergency Activation - March 5, 2014

Wednesday, March 5, 2014

Summary of Cold Emergency notice:

  • Based on the forecast, the Alert will NOT be activated the rest of the week. Clients should be informed that tonight is the last night of the additional open sites.
  • When the Alert is de-activated, additional shelter and warming site functions will cease, but individuals may remain inside to keep warm.
  • Based on usage, Greenleaf Recreation Center will be on standby tonight and only open if needed.
  • The Shelter Hotline will have the latest information about open sites and will transport as needed.

When the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees F or below, the District issues a Hypothermia Alert. If the actual or forecasted temperature or wind chill is 15 degrees or below, or 20 degrees with precipitation or other cold indicators, a Cold Emergency Alert will be activated. This means that additional services and supports are available to help homeless residents. To request support for persons in DC who are homeless and on the street now, contact the Shelter Hotline at 1-800-535-7252 or 311 or email [email protected]. Visit www.dmhhs.dc.gov for updates. To receive alerts, register with Alert DC online at https://textalert.ema.dc.gov/register.php or by texting "DC" to 411911.
